Chapter Twenty-six

Kat

I walked—okay, bolted—into Sam’s house and shut the door behind me. As soon as it registered that he was absolutely serious, heat began to bloom in my lower belly, arousal pooling in the space between my legs.

This motherfudger was actually going to try to throw me over his shoulder, caveman style!

I mean, don’t get me wrong—under normal circumstances, I’d be one hundred percent for it. But he’s only a few months post-op—he’s absolutely looney if he thinks I’d let him risk hurting himself.

I guess he’s… motivated.

I heard the front door creak open and backed further into the kitchen. I could hear my pulse in my ears, adrenaline coursing through me for multiple reasons—the anticipation, the excitement, the thrill of being chased… I knew that realistically, he’d find me easily—I wasn’t exactly trying to hide. Despite being to Sam’s house numerous times, I’d never actually been through it.

“Katsumi,” he sing-songed tauntingly. His voice was gravelly and raw, and so freaking sexy; just hearing the sound was making heat rush to my center. “You know, it’s not like there are many places for you to hide in here, baby…”

I know there aren’t, but I like this game.

Also, if he keeps calling me ‘baby’, I may actually melt into the floorboards.

I heard another door click. I stifled a giggle and took another step back and into the kitchen. I was reminded that he pulled up half of the flooring when a nail crunched under my Converses as I tiptoed around the pantry cabinet. I leaned against it until I was flush with it, then peered around its edge.

I wonder if I can startle him…

I heard Sam draw in a slow, cleansing breath. “You like this game, don’t you, dove?” I heard his voice again, but this time it was coming from a different direction, and how the heck?!

My heart was jackhammering in my chest. I decided to leave my spot to peer out of the kitchen and see if I could spot him. When I looked down the hall, it was empty. I looked toward the living room—nothing.

Weird. Where the heck could he have gone? There’s literally no other way he could go—you either go down the hallway or go past the kitchen…

I took a step back and backed right into the wall.

Well, a wall. If a wall was made of one hundred percent Sam.

I didn’t turn around. Instead, I stayed stiff as a board as I felt Sam’s hands rest gently around my waist.

“You know what I love about you, Kat?”

I drew in a shaky breath and whispered, “What’s that?”

His lips grazed my ear, and the heat of his breath rolled down my neck, sending delicious chills up my spine. “That at your core, you’re absolutely unafraid. There’s this rational part of you that’s almost constantly at play—she’s methodical, purpose-driven, and likes to keep the peace. But there’s this other side of you that’s hidden in there—that part of you that wants to spread her wings. And I can’t help but notice that when you’re with me, she tests the door to that cage you keep her in.
